The first thing you’ll notice about Mendl is the beautiful design. Starting with the entrance door, which captivates my attention every single time. It’s a simple, yet oversized glass pane that when open dresses the side wall, subtly showing off the restaurant’s name. Beyond it, you see a couple of spaces with plenty of light and thoughtfully decorated. The design strikes a balance between modern and traditional, elegant yet sober at the same time. The theme is clean: light yellow colored walls, wooden details throughout, lots of plants, and good lighting, with a cobalt and azure blue hues for accents.
Mendl offers both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a charming street-facing window for quick grab-and-go items like bagels, sandwiches, pastries, and the typical drinks specialty coffee places carry these days. While I usually go for outdoor seating, here I much prefer the indoor tables as those will let you experience the peculiarities mentioned above. The tables and their layout seem to be great for smaller groups, making it ideal for catching up with a friend or a low-key business meeting, though maybe not the best spot for big gatherings.
The food is good—definitely solid, though maybe not something I find myself craving every day. I’ve sampled several dishes, and I’ve been happy each time, but nothing has yet blown me away. As for the staff, I’ve heard some mixed reviews from others who felt the servers could be a bit standoffish. Personally, I haven’t found that to be the case. My servers have been friendly, if a bit new to the role, but nothing that took away from the experience.
TL;DR: Mendl is unique in its design, decore, and atmosphere, and solid food and drinks. I’m yet to find another place in Condesa that causes such awe, and that fires up my senses in joy. Definitely one of my top choices for breakfast when I’m near parque México.
